In 1973 after serving his time in the United States Marine Corps, Ken (K.L.) Smith
returned home to the states from Vietnam. Ken decided that he wanted to help his community in
a way in which he enjoyed. Building and working with his hands came natural to Ken. He earned
his contractor’s license and got to work right here in Polk County. K.L. Smith has exclusively
provided high quality work for Polk County residents throughout the years, his commitment to a
quality job at a fair price, earned him the reputation for being the best in the business.
Ken, being a working father, often brought his young son Ryan to the job sites and
passed on the knowledge of construction, commitment to integrity, and pride that comes with
putting the Smith family name on every job. Over time Ryan’s childhood friend James (J.R.)
came on board and was already well aware of the high expectations of Mr. Smith. Timeliness,

At the turn of the century Ryan began taking a more active role in leading the company.
Ryan’s innovative thought process and determination brought youth and new skill sets. This
change in leadership allowed KL Smith to continue to evolve with the help of technology and

craftsmanship that K.L. Smith was founded on.

Now, being in the roofing industry for over 20 years themselves, Ryan and J.R. have
